Seasons in the Science Lab

We went to the science lab and read the book Colors of the Seasons by Margaret Perez. We discussed how trees look in each season. Then we used Q-tips and paint to illustrate how a tree changes through the seasons. We labeled the trees with the season they represented.

Tea Tasting

We read Miss Spider's Tea Party by David Kirk. Then we tasted cherry, peach, and raspberry tea. We chose our favorite and graphed the results. Then we drew conclusions about our data. It was close between cherry and raspberry but cherry won.

Then we made a spider snack in response to Miss Spider's Tea Party and our poem Tommy's Pet Spider. We also made spiders using paper plates, paint, and construction paper.

Pixie 2 Patterns

In math, we have been working on creating a pattern, labeling it, and identifying the pattern core. On Wednesday, we went to the computer lab and each student created their own AB pattern, labeled it, and divided the pattern to show the core in the software program Pixie 2. The pattern core is the smallest unit of the pattern that repeats (AB).

Cookie Election

This week we held an election to choose our class cookie! On Tuesday, we researched three different cookies - chocolate chip, NutterButter, and Oreos. We taste tested them and put them in milk to see if they sink/float and how well they hold together. Then we crushed them to see what kind of crumbs they make. We made a tree map to record our findings. Students choose which cookie they wanted to campaign for and created a poster with their group.

On Wednesday, each group shared their poster and explained why we should vote for their cookie. Then students voted by circling their choice and placing it in the ballot box.

Today we counted the votes and graphed the results. Then we analyzed the data on our graph and used it to draw conclusions about the election results. The students had so much fun learning about the voting process.

Goodie Bags Math

We have been working on identifying, writing, and making sets of numbers 1-10. Today we read The Berenstein Bears Trick or Treat. Then we worked with a partner to count, record, and illustrate the number of candies in our goodie bags. We also counted and recorded one more and one less than our orginal set.

Pumpkins!

We did a lot of activities with pumpkins this week! We explored the pumpkins using our five senses. We conducted an experiment to see if our pumpkins would float and they did. We found out they float because they are mostly hollow inside and the mass of the air keeps the pumpkin above water. After opening a pumpkin, we illustrated the parts of a pumpkin and sequenced the pumpkin life cycle. On Friday afternoon, each student made their own upside down pumpkin pie using vanilla pudding with pumpkin pie spice, pumpkin, and graham cracker crumbs. The students loved making and eating their snack. Thank you to all the parents who helped make our pumpkin study a success by sending a pumpkin to school!
