Spiders!
This week in science we learned about spiders. We learned that spiders have two body parts. We created spiders and labeled their parts. We also created a spider snack. We learned about how and why spiders spin webs. We wove our own webs and we learned about the life cycle of spiders. In the science lab, we looked at website that helped us learn about the spider life cycle and watched a video of a spider's mating dance!

Clouds!
We went to the science lab on Friday and learned about how clouds are formed and how rain falls. Mrs. Riggins boiled water and put in a glass jar. Then we put ice cubes on top of the lid. We watched as droplets formed, condensed, and fell. We learned about evaporation and condensation. Then we recorded what we learned in our science journals!

Valentine's Day 2010!
We had a lot of fun learning about Valentine's Day! We learned about symbols of Valentine's Day: hearts, cupid, roses, etc. We also read Clifford's First Valentine's Day and made Clifford using a Valentine symbol-hearts! We sorted Conversation Hearts by colors and then we used our hearts to make a real object graph. We describe the results of our graph to our table using comparative language (more, less, same as).

Animal Protection
We are learning about animal coverings and how they provide protection for them in the environment and from the weather. We went to the science lab to discover how fat keeps animals warm. We placed our hands in a fat mit. There was a plastic bag containing grease (fat) that sealed inside of another bag. We slipped our hand in and put it fat side down on top of ice and then hand side on top of ice. Then we compared the difference and recorded our discovery in our science journal.

Groundhog Day
Tuesday was Groundhog Day! Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow which means we should have 6 more weeks of winter. We are participating in Project Groundhog as scientists collecting data to see if Phil's prediction is correct. We read Punxsutawney Phyllis and created a story map. We started collecting our weather data and we watched a video about Groundhog's Day and created circle maps in small groups about what we learned. Then we tasted groundhog food (tomatoes, carrots, and spinach leave), graphed our favorite and analyzed our results.
