Sensory Details in There Was a Cold Lady who Swallowed Some Snow

We reviewed our five senses and sang I Have Five Senses by Dr. Jean. Then we discussed how sensory details help us picture the story in our mind like black hat or steaming hot cocoa. Then we read There Was a Cold Lady Who Swallowed Some Snow. We stopped to discuss things we could see, hear, smell, taste, and touch in our story. Then students were given a sticky note and a sense. They went to their seats and illustrated something from the story they could experience with the sense they were given. We came to the carpet, students shared as I labeled their pictures. Then they sorted their pictures by sense on our chart.

Nature Center 2011

We took a trip to the GPISD Nature Center. The kids were so excited to ride the bus. They were good listeners while Mrs. Hollis gave us directions.

We used hand lenses to examine objects we found. We illustrated what it looked like in our hand and under the hand lens.

We read Life in a Tree and discussed the life we could see in the tree. Then we measured the trunk of the tree using links and then our hands.

Then we read There Was An Old Who Swallowed a Fly and acted our the story as we read. Then we used hand lens to examine insects. We illustrated an insect and answered questions about our insect.

We read My 5 Senses and then discussed our five senses and how they help us learn about our world. Then we went on a five senses walk in the garden. We illustrated and wrote the things we observed using each of our five senses.

Light, Color, and Sight

We went to the science lab and explored with our sense of sight, color and light. We used prisms and peeps and recorded our observations in our science journals. Then we watched a short video about light.

Sight and Color Mixing

We've been learning about using our sense of sight as an observation tool along with color and light. We mixed red, blue, and yellow play doh to see what new colors we could make while singing a color mixing song. We recorded our observations in our science journals. This has been one of our favorite science lessons so far this year!

Textures in the Garden

We went outside today and explored our sense of touch and different textures in our garden. Before going outside, we talked with Mrs. Riggins, our Math/Science strategist about what texture is and our sense of touch. She showed up how to make crayon rubbings of different textures. Then we lined up with paper and crayons and went outside to explore texture in our garden. I was so proud to hear them using texture vocabulary like rough, smooth, bumpy without being prompted.

Here's some pictures exploring texture in our garden:

Here's Mrs. Riggins helping one of our friends do a crayon rubbing of a cantaloupe.

Mystery Sounds

We went to the science lab and used a sense of sound to figure out the objects in six different bags. The students passed the bags around, shook each one, and then drew their prediction in their science journal. At the end, the students shared their predictions and we revealed what was in each bag. One bag had cotton balls, so we discussed how some objects make very soft sounds. The objects we used were cotton balls, coins, pet mulch, Legos, sand, and buttons.

Five Senses and Weather

In science this week, we read Parts by Ted Arnold. On Monday we talked about the different parts of his body that were coming "unglued" and we illustrated a picture of our bodies and wrote our names. Then on Tuesday we read the story again and focused on which of his senses were making him aware of his different body parts coming apart. Then the students colored and cut out pictures and glued them on their body pictures to match the sense they would use to experience that object.

We also learned about different types of weather and the seasons. We talked about how the seasons are a cycle because they repeat in the same order every year. We also talked about clothing that is appropriate for each season. We illustrateded appropriate seasonal clothing and labeled the seasons on a paper plate.

First Week of School

I'm super excited about this class and proud of how smoothly the first week of school went! Thank you parents for waiting patiently at dismissal so I could dismiss the students one at a time.

We have started learning our procedures and routines in our classroom. We learned about PAW Pride and how we are to act in the cafeteria, hallways, restrooms, and at recess. We explored with the some of the different math manipulatives we will be using this year.

In science, we learned about our five senses and how they help us learn about the world around us. We used our sense of touch to feel objects in socks and guess what they were. We smelled different scents in baggies and guessed what they were. We tasted pickles, pretzel sticks, and chocolate chips. We learned about where we taste salty, sweet, sour, and bitter on our tongues. We also learned a song about our five senses.

We read The Kissing Hand and made a kissing hand for our parents on the first day. We read Miss Bindergarten Gets Ready for Kindergarten and took pictures for our class book  Mrs. Shaw Gets Ready for Kindergarten.

We sang The Wheels on the Bus and then made our own buses and wrote how our buses would go through the town.

We ate Hershey's chocolate bars and then cut out the word he or she from the wrapper and used it graph the number of boys and girls in our class. We also used our graph to figure out how many total students we have in our class.

We created ourselves using a glyph code. We colored our pieces according to what we liked best from the questions we were given. Then we talked to a partner about how our glyphs were the same and different. We learned a lot about each other!

Camping!

We spent our last day doing camping actvities. We read A Camping Spree with Mr. Magee. We stopped at the point of the story when the camper stops rolling and rests next to the car. The students wrote and illustrated what they thought when happen next. Then we shared and finished the end of the story. We made and ate yummy s'mores. We put our hands inside a backpack and used our sense of touch to guess what camping items were in the backpack.
