I'm excited to be joining in the TpT Seller Challenge! I updated my Science Learning Fun unit.
I had updated the class book covers when I used them this past year. I had also created a couple of more measurement activities I needed to add to the unit. I also updated the product cover and my preview to include every page of the unit.
This unit will be on sale through Monday, June 22nd.

Direct Comparisons with Weight
We began by watching a short video about measurement and the students coming up with a definition for weight. Then students took a marker and found objects in the classroom they thought were heavier, lighter, or the same as. We began by just holding one object in each hand and making comparison using heavier, lighter, or the same as. Then the next day, we got out the balance scales and discussed the purpose of the scale. This time each student choose 1 item from the classroom. At their tables they decided which two objects, they would hold and share their prediction. Then they put them on the scale to see if they were correct. Then they repeated with the last two. They recorded the actual results in their math journal. Then they switched objects with a different table.

Direct Comparisons with Length
We read Jack and the Beanstalk. Then we drew beanstalks, cut them out and made comparisons with our partner. Students used comparative language to describe their beanstalks with their partners.
We read Arthur's Pet Business and then used our stuffed pets from home to compare length with our partner's.
We also made comparisons by finding things around our classroom that were longer, shorter, or the same as our foot after we read How Big is a Foot?.
Here is our anchor chart we worked all week to create.

Dino-Mite Learning
We used dinosaurs to review concepts we learned this year. In science, we reviewed characteristics of reptiles and discussed how dinosaurs are like a system. We discussed the purpose of their parts. We also reviewed life cycles and compared and contrasted herbivores with carnivores. Two science vocab words that have been the science word of the week recently.
In math, we told addition and subtraction stories using dino fruit snacks. We created dino positional patterns. We read How Do Dinosaurs Say Goodnight? and then discussed bedtime routines and acted two out a time and used comparative language to describe the length of time each activity took. We also drew our favorite dinosaur and used different manipulatives to find the length and area of our dinosaurs. Then we compared with our partner. We also made dinosaur glyphs to answer the following questions: Do you like carnivores or herbivores best? Did you like the book Dinosaur Roar! or Dinosaurumpus best? Do you think dinosaurs are creepy or cool? We graphed the answers for the class all together. Then students went to their seats and graphed the answers for their table.
In social studies, we learned about the job of paleontologists. We watched two different Discovery Streaming videos about their job. We also excavated chocolate chips from cookies. We created a concept anchor chart to show what we knew and what we learned.
In language arts, our focus poem was about dinosaurs. We clapped to the rhythm of the poem. We looked for rhyming words, word family words, helpful chunks, and word wall words. We acted out our poem. We did dinosaur word wall words where we stomped like dinos as we chanted the letters and then roared the words.

Measurement
We have been working on measurement this last six weeks. Here are some of the activities we have done so far:
We used Twizzlers as our measuring sticks and found objects around our classroom that are longer/shorter/same length as our Twizzler.
We brought stuffed animal pets from home and worked in small groups to weigh them on our balance scales. Then we ordered them from lightest to heaviest.
We used our shoes to find the area of large fish, turtle, starfish, and whale cut outs.
We found the capactiy of small paper cups using goldfish crackers, shell pasta, and star cereal.

Insects
We learned about the parts of insects and their purpose. We created a brace map of a bee. Then we learned about the insect life cycle. We also made a model of an insect using candy.
We read Because a Little Bug went Ka-CHOO! and created a tree map of causese and effects.
We read The Very Hungry Caterpillar and created caterpillars of three different lengths on a leaf and labeled them long, longer, longest.

Watermelon!
Today we did learning activities with a watermelon. We measured the length, circumference, and weight of our watermelon. We estimated how many seeds were in our watermelon. Then we cut it into pieces and picked out the seeds using a toothpick. We put our seeds into groups of 10. We had 420 seeds in our watermelon. We ate the watermelon and also tried watermelon pudding and gum. We made a watermelon glyph to discover data about our class. We learned that everyone's favorite fruit is watermelon and everyone liked the watermelon gum better than the pudding.

Life in a Pond
This week we learned about life in a pond. We worked all week on creating a pond mural. We learned that a pond is wetland habitat that is a complete eco system which means all the animals/plants depend upon each other for survival. We learned about the food chain in the pond and the physical characteristics and natural resources. We learned about producers like plants who use energy from the sun to make their own food and consumers animals that are depedent upon others for their food. In Math, we drew a number word from a bag, read the word, colored our pond, and created a set of fish that matched the number word. We also made lily pad cookie treats on Friday. We learned that frogs can jump up to 10 feet. We measured off ten feet and jumped to find out how many jumps we had to do to jump 10 feet. We also went out to our pond in the garden and made a tree map of living organims and nonliving objects in and around our pond.

Butterflies
We spent the first part of the week learning about insects in general and the last part of the week specifically about butterflies! During shared reading, we read a big book Katy Grows Up about a caterpillar who asks her animal friends what she will be when she grows up. We learned about Right there Questions-questions that the answer tells us in the story and Schema questions-questions where we have to use our schema (what we already know) and the story to answer the question. We worked on main idea and supporting details with the story as well. Click on the slideshow below to see what concepts we worked on this week with insects.
