Soil Comparisons

Today we examined three different types of soil with hand lenses. We looked at gravel, garden soil, and sand. We illustrated and wrote about what was in each type of soil in science journals.

Once we finished examining and recording, we listed together what was found in each kind. Then we used a triple Venn Diagram to compare and contrast the different types of soil.

What I Know is True about Reading

I read the class one of my favorite books I Know An Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly. The old lady has many books and has swallowed lots of things leaves, snow, a chick, etc. Afterward, I shared with my students something I know is true about reading. I can read my favorite book over and over. Then they shared with their partner what they know about reading. Then we talked together and created an anchor chart about what we know is true about reading. The students were amazed at what they already know about reading! Then before going to their literacy workstations, they wrote and illustrated in their Reader's Notebook what they know is true about reading.

Tobacco is Foul!

A group from the Region 10 Education Center came and spoke with the students about the importance of saying no to cigarettes. Mr. Joshua shared with students how smoking hurts their bodies and what's inside of cigarettes. He shared a couple of video clips and showed them some of the ingredients. Then one of his friends led the students in exercises to show how smoking affects your breathing. They led us in no smoking cheers. The kids favorite was "Quack, Quack! Tobacoo's wack!" You check out more videos and games at Tobacco is Foul website.

Systems

We went to the science lab and used the K'Nex kits to explore systems.

We worked in groups to create systems.

We learned that the most important thing about systems is they have to have all their parts to work.

Naming Words

This week during our shared reading of the book We Like Ice Cream by Joy Cowley, we focused on naming words. The students learned that naming words (nouns) are a person, place, or things. We charted and categorized the naming words from story on a tree map. Then we brainstormed and created circle maps of naming words. On Friday, the students created naming words flip books.

Spiders

We learned all about spiders this week. We learned about the spider's body parts and their function. We also learned about the life cycle and illustrated and labeled it on a paper plate. We learned abut their habitats and how they eat. We created spiders and labeled their body parts. We also wrote together about what we learned about htis week.

On Friday, we read Miss Spider's Tea Party. Then we tasted three different kinds of tea: cherry, peach, and raspberry. Then we graphed our favorite. First we made a real object graph using our cups and then we colored the fruit we liked best and created a graph using our pictures. We talked to our partner about the data on the graph and wrote together about it.

Sorting by Attributes

This week in math, we learned about sorting and attributes. We learned that attributes are words that describe: color, size, shape, texture, etc. We connected back to science by reviewing our five senses and what we learned about properties of objects. The first day, each student brought a ball to school and created a circle map of words that described their balls. Then we charted the words. Then we went back and categorized the words in groups such as color, size, shape, texture, etc.

Then someone came into our room on Monday evening and mixed up our math manipulatives. We had to use what we learned about attributes the day before to sort them. After sorting several ways, students recorded one sort in their math journals and labeled with the attribute.

Then we read The Button Box and discussed all the different ways they sorted buttons in the story. Then students worked in small groups to sort buttons.

On Thursday, the students were presented with a problem. They were given a bag of "cookies" and 4 plates. They had to sort the cookies by 1 attribute and make sure everyone got the same number of cookies on their plate. They had a lot of fun guessing and checking.

50th Day of School

Today we celebrated the 50th day of school. We dressed in the fashions of the 1950s.

Here I am with Coach T our PE aide.

We talked about how technology and fashion has changed since the 50s. Then we sorted pictures in small groups.

We had Dr. Pepper floats to celebrate after we learned about the diners and soda fountains.
