Project Groundhog 2010 Update

After six weeks of collecting and discussing our weather data, we have decided that our groundhog Mr. Sneaky accurately predicted more winter when he saw his shadow on February 2nd. We have had 2 days of snow in Texas since he saw his shadow! You can check out the final results of the rest of our team at Project Groundhog 2010. Remember click on data, view final data, K-1, and then K-1 Team 14.

Color Mixing in the Science Lab

We read My Many Colored Days by Dr. Seuss. One activity we did in the science lab was to add food coloring to shaving cream and to see what new colors were created. We recorded our hypothesises and our results. More Dr. Seuss activities will be coming soon in slide show I'm working on.

Dear Tooth Fairy

We read Dear Tooth Fairy about a little girl who writes a letter to the Tooth Fairy because she's worried that she hasn't lost any teeth yet. Then we wrote our own letter to the Tooth Fairy telling her we're taking good care of our teeth and asking her where she gets the money to give us for our teeth. She wrote us back and told us she takes our teeth to the Teeth Recycling Plant and that's where she gets the money to give us! We also graphed how many teeth we've lost this year and made groups of tally marks to figure out how many total teeth we lost this year. We've lost 24 teeth!

A Visit from the Cat in the Hat!!!

Kindergarten and PreK students had a special treat this morning-a visit from the Cat in the Hat! He read us his favorite story which I'm sure you guessed is The Cat in the Hat. After story time in the library, we returned to the classroom and wrote what we think would happen if the Cat came back. We are making our writing responses into a class book.

Making Connections

We have been learning about the importance of making connections when we read. We have worked on personal connections when something in a story makes us think of something we have done before. We have also practiced making text to text connections which is when something in a story reminds us of something in a different story. We read Goldilocks and the Three Bears this week and we made connections to The Three Little Pigs which is a story we read before. We created a double map to compare and contrast the stories.
