Big Idea and Connections with Folktales

    We began by reading Goldilocks and the Three Bears and discussing and charting the big idea of the story. Then we made personal connections with the big idea and characters.

    Then we read Goldie and the Three Hares which is a story about what happens to Goldie after she runs away from the the three bears. We discussed and recorded the big idea and personal connections.

    Then we made connections with Goldie by writing how Goldie was a bad guest and a time we were a bad guest. Then we created hares to go with our responses.

Characters and Motives

We have been learning about characters and their motives for doing and saying things in stories to help us better understand what we read and what is read to us. We introduced this by reading Auntie Claus. I modeled the first three examples on our chart. Then for the last two, the students talked with their partners and I wrote down what they discussed. We also reviewed theme or the big idea of the story. All the students agreed that the big idea was it is better to give than receive. We talked about how we can give our time to help someone else that giving is not just material things.

Butterflies

We spent the first part of the week learning about insects in general and the last part of the week specifically about butterflies! During shared reading, we read a big book Katy Grows Up about a caterpillar who asks her animal friends what she will be when she grows up. We learned about Right there Questions-questions that the answer tells us in the story and Schema questions-questions where we have to use our schema (what we already know) and the story to answer the question.
