Rain Rain Go Away

     We read One Little Raindrop. After we read, discussed and charted the water cycle on the whiteboard. Then students drew and labeled their own in their science journal. 

     Then we read One Rainy Day and talked with our partners about things we see on a rainy day. Then students illustrated and labels things they see on rainy days.

Weather

     In our weather unit, we learned about the four components of weather: precipitation, wind speed, cloud cover, and temperature. We practiced observing and describing the four components. We also discussed items that protect us from precipitation and temperature, as well as tools to measure wind speed, temperature, and precipitation. After discussing and charting on the board, students went back to their seats, choose a type of weather, drew it and a form of protection and a measurement tool. 

It Looked Like Spilt Milk

We read It Looked Like Spilt Milk by Charles Shaw. Before reading, we talked about looking at clouds and how we can see pictures in them sometimes. Students talked with their partner about what clouds looked like. After reading the story, we painted with white paint on one half of our paper to make a cloud. Then we folded our paper on top of the white paint and smoothed it with our hand. Students were given a few minutes to study their cloud and think about what picture they saw in their cloud. Then we came to the carpet and shared our cloud and the picture we saw.

Weather

In science, we focused on weather-what it is and different types. We read Brave Irene  and noticed the way weather affected her in the story. Then we talked about appropriate clothing for different types of weather. We illustrated a picture of ourselves wearing appropriate hot and cold weather clothing.

We read The Wind Blew and conducted an experiment to see how wind affects objects. We experimented by trying to blow on the objects first. Then we predicted if we thought the fan would move them or not. Then we recorded the results.

We also were able to go outside to the garden with one of the Real School Gardens representative and learn about weather with him. We discussed the temperature and made observations using our senses as our science tools. We were even able to take a nature walk!

We learned about how clouds and rain are formed. We watched a clip from Magic School Bus where it shows the students forming rain drops in the clouds and then falling as snow and rain. Then we illustrated and wrote about what we learned in our science journals.

We also learned about characteristics of snowy weather. We read A Really Good Snowman and I showed them pictures from my house when it snowed last winter. We created a circle map of characteristics and then illustrated a snowy scene using white crayons on blue construction paper.

Five Senses and Weather

In science this week, we read Parts by Ted Arnold. On Monday we talked about the different parts of his body that were coming "unglued" and we illustrated a picture of our bodies and wrote our names. Then on Tuesday we read the story again and focused on which of his senses were making him aware of his different body parts coming apart. Then the students colored and cut out pictures and glued them on their body pictures to match the sense they would use to experience that object.

We also learned about different types of weather and the seasons. We talked about how the seasons are a cycle because they repeat in the same order every year. We also talked about clothing that is appropriate for each season. We illustrateded appropriate seasonal clothing and labeled the seasons on a paper plate.

Clouds!

We went to the science lab on Friday and learned about how clouds are formed and how rain falls. Mrs. Riggins boiled water and put in a glass jar. Then we put ice cubes on top of the lid. We watched as droplets formed, condensed, and fell. We learned about evaporation and condensation. Then we recorded what we learned in our science journals!
